Golden Paw Awards

We depend on the enthusiasm, generosity, and skills of our amazing volunteers.  To date, we have over 500 volunteers that help with animal care, fostering, fundraising, TNR, and supporting our SPCA thrift stores. On behalf of our SPCA shelter pets, we are excited to celebrate outstanding volunteerism with Golden Paw Awards.

As a token of our appreciation, each recipient receives a $25 gift card, a framed certificate, and a $25 donation is made to the SPCA in their honour which has all been made possible by a generous donor: Queenidog.

Tammy Acker – February 2020

Tammy Acker is a true hero. For more than 14 years, Tammy has been raising awareness and funds for local pets in need. Through her hard work and dedication, Tammy has brought in upwards of $40,000 over the years to help homeless animals in Hants. Along with her efforts in advocacy and fundraising, Tammy also helps to coordinate care for local animals and presents on behalf of the organization. We are lucky to have her enthusiasm and energy as a part of our SPCA family. Thank you, Tammy!

P.S. A special shout-out to the team at Windsor Shur-Gain Feeds’n Needs for being such amazing pawtners!

Gloria Stewart – January 2020

Seven years ago, Gloria began volunteering for the SPCA and has been helping save lives ever since.  As a lifelong animal-lover, Gloria goes above and beyond to help animals in need.  Whether it is fostering and socializing kittens, helping with cat care at the shelter, or volunteering with the TNR program, Gloria is there with a smile on her face and ready to help.  She even takes care of the staff and volunteers by bringing in yummy vegan goodies to treat them.  Congratulations on your Golden Paw Award and thank you, Gloria!

Mary Priest – December 2019

We have been lucky to have Mary Priest volunteering for nearly five years!  Twice a week, Mary generously volunteers her time to help with animal care.  “I would take my granddaughter Hallie there to socialize with the kitties,” says Mary.  “When she went back to school I started coming to the shelter to help clean.  My favourite part is helping all the furbabies and socializing with the people that come in!”  Congratulations, Mary!  On behalf of all our SPCA furry friends, thank you for your kindness.

Melissa Lee – November 2019

Melissa Lee has done it again!  This is her second Golden Paw award for her outstanding support for the SPCA.  For more than eight years Melissa has generously volunteered her time.  “I enjoy volunteering because I think it makes a difference to animals while they spend their time at the shelter,” says Melissa.  And she is totally right!  We are lucky to have such a passionate animal lover helping.  Congratulations and thank you, Melissa!

Linda Williams – October 2019

Linda Williams is a burst of sunshine and we are proud to share she is our next SPCA Golden Paw Award winner. Seven years ago when Linda retired, she connected with the Antigonish SPCA to give back to the community she loves.  Since then, Linda always goes above and beyond to help local animals in need.  She has helped with fostering, office administration, fundraising and community engagement.  Thank you, Linda for your compassionate support!

Garry Smith – September 2019

Garry Smith volunteers at the Cape Breton SPCA Thrift Store four times a week and is a lifelong animal lover and advocate.  Back in 1975 while working as an RCMP Officer, Garry remembers laying the very first charge for a case of cruelty to animals in Nova Scotia.  When not volunteering, Garry is always either fostering pets or promoting the SPCA.  We have even had customers and donations come in from 2-3 hours away because of Garry.  Thank you, Garry, for your kindness, compassion and dedication.  Enjoy your SPCA Golden Paw Award!
